About Andrew

Andrew Terry is the Professor of Business Regulation in the Discipline of Business Law within the University of Sydney Business School. He earned his LLB (Honours) and LLM (Honours) from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Prior to his current role, Terry had a distinguished career at the University of New South Wales, where he joined the School of Business Law and Taxation in 1975 after serving in the Faculty of Law at the University of Canterbury. He held the position of Head of School for more than 15 years until his retirement in 2009, at which point he was appointed Emeritus Professor. In 2010, he took up his professorship at the University of Sydney, continuing his expertise in business regulation.

Terry's academic interests centre on competition law, fair trading law, and intellectual property law, with a special emphasis on franchising. His research explores areas such as misleading and unconscionable conduct within the franchising sector. He has made significant contributions through authorship and editorship of key texts. Notable among these is the Handbook of Research on Franchising (Edward Elgar, 2017), co-edited with Frank Hoy and Rozenn Perrigot. He co-authored Business, Society and the Law (2nd edition, Harcourt Brace, 1997) with P.D. Giugni and contributed multiple chapters to its 3rd edition (Thomson, 2003), including on franchising, competition and regulation, consumer protection and fair trading, misleading and unconscionable conduct, guarantees, licensing, advertising, restrictive trade practices, and international business. Additional works include chapters on franchise regulation in China (2008) and extensive contributions to Franchising Law and Practice on misleading conduct and establishing franchise systems. Terry maintains a long-standing engagement with the franchising industry and serves on influential committees, such as his reappointment in 2020 to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's small business committee. His work has influenced business regulation policy and practice in Australia.
