About Andrew

Andrew Mathas is Professor of Pure Mathematics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, at the University of Sydney. He obtained his BSc with First Class Honours in 1989 and MSc in 1990 from the University of Sydney, followed by a PhD in 1993 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His postdoctoral positions included Kenna Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame (1993–1994), Research Associate at Imperial College London (1994–1997), and Research Fellow at Universität Bielefeld (1997). Since joining the University of Sydney in 1997 as Senior Research Associate and U2000 Postdoctoral Fellow, he progressed through Lecturer (2000–2003), Senior Lecturer (2004–2006), Associate Professor (2007–2010), to Professor in 2011. He served as Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics from January to December 2015 and held an Australian Professorial Fellowship from 2009 to 2013.

Mathas specializes in algebraic combinatorics and representation theory, particularly of symmetric groups, cyclotomic Hecke algebras, quiver Hecke algebras, KLR algebras, and categorification techniques. His seminal book, Iwahori-Hecke algebras and Schur algebras of the symmetric group (American Mathematical Society, 1999), is a key reference in the field. Notable publications include 'Cellularity of KLR and weighted KLRW algebras via crystals' (Communications in Mathematical Physics, forthcoming, with Daniel Tubbenhauer), 'Skew cellularity of the Hecke algebras of type G(ℓ,p,n)' (Representation Theory, 2023, with Jun Hu and Salim Rostam), and 'Positive Jantzen sum formulas for cyclotomic Hecke algebras' (Mathematische Zeitschrift, 2022). He has received multiple Australian Research Council Discovery Grants, such as 'Categorification and KLR algebras' (2024, $524,369 with Catharina Stroppel), 'Graded semisimple deformations' (2020), and others dating back to 2005. Awards include the Australian Mathematical Society Medal (2006), Fellowship of the Australian Mathematical Society (2007), Faculty of Science Teaching Award (2004), and various international fellowships like JSPS Invitation Fellowship (2004) and Simons Foundation Fellowship (2025). Mathas edits Algebras and Representation Theory (since 2020) and Annals of Representation Theory (since 2026), and contributes to open-source mathematics software including Sage-combinat.
