Professor Andrew Campbell is the Professor of Cyberpsychology in the Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He holds a PhD awarded in 2003 and possesses over two decades of expertise in researching and teaching digital mental health, cyberpsychology, child, adolescent, and family mental health. He was appointed Senior Child and Adolescent Psychologist at the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Research Institute and as a tenured academic researcher and teacher in cyberpsychology and human development. In 2017, he established and chairs Australia's inaugural Cyberpsychology Research Group, focusing on the behavioral impacts of consumer technologies including smartphones, video games, social networking, wearables, VR, AI, and more. From 2011 to 2014, he directed the Bachelor of Health Science Degree Program.
His research specializes in digital mental health interventions, cyber security and online deception, digital therapies, social media effects, internet addiction, cyberbullying, artificial intelligence applications, mobile technologies, VR/AR/MR, and gamification for health outcomes. Notable projects under his leadership include 'My Circles' (developed over 12 years, now serving youth via Kids Helpline), KHL Circles efficacy trial (2016–2019), Impact of Social Media on Myanmar Youth (2019), and current efforts in scam prevention socio-technical systems (2023-2024). Campbell has attracted more than USD$20 million in research grants, including over USD$3 million from industry partners. He has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications, co-authored Human Development textbooks with Philip Zimbardo (2008-2012), and holds the position of Inaugural Australasian Editor for the Journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. Among his honors are the 2017 Australian Psychological Society Award for Outstanding Lecturer, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2018), 2023 University of Sydney PhD Supervisor of the Year (School of Medical Sciences), and 2024 CyberTherapy Lifetime Achievement Award. He teaches units like Cyberpsychology in Digital Health (BIDH3146), Innovations in eHealth (HSBH2009), and Digital Health in Practice (BIDH3008), while frequently delivering public lectures and media commentary on technology's psychological impacts.
