About Andre

André Sammartino is an Associate Professor of International Business and Area Head in International Business within the Department of Management and Marketing at the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Business and Economics. He earned his BCom (Hons) and PhD from the University of Melbourne. Sammartino began his academic career at the same institution as a Lecturer in the Department of Management and Marketing from 2003 to 2010, advancing to Associate Professor in 2010, a position he continues to hold. His longstanding commitment to the university includes leading significant curriculum developments, such as a wholesale revamp of undergraduate subjects to better align with evolving student needs.

Sammartino's scholarship centers on the intersection of international business and strategic management. Key research interests encompass regionalisation and globalisation of firms, internationalisation of Australian firms and retailers, transformation of subsidiary roles, vertical scope and competitive advantage, business history, and internal labour markets. He investigates cognitive processes in multinational expansion decisions, collaborating with senior executives to explore perceptions of opportunities and risks, including executives' differing views on cultural distances in contexts like Islamic versus traditional banking internationalisation. Additionally, his work traces over a century of multinationals' engagement with Australia alongside historian colleagues and examines entrepreneurial strategies in mature markets, such as craft breweries evading competition from large beer multinationals. As leader of the Ruthven Institute Hub, he directs studies on drivers of firm performance among Australia's biggest companies. His influential publications include "Managerial Cognition and Internationalization" (with Elizabeth Maitland, Journal of International Business Studies, 2015), "Decision Making and Uncertainty: The Role of Heuristics and Experience in Assessing a Politically Hazardous Environment" (with Elizabeth Maitland, Strategic Management Journal, 2015), "Reassessing (Home-)Regionalisation" (with Thomas Osegowitsch, Journal of International Business Studies, 2008), "Craft Brewing in Australia, 1979-2015" (2018), and "Taking the Long View of the Multinational" (with David Merrett, Pierre van der Eng, and Simon Ville, Multinational Business Review, 2023). With over 1,399 citations on Google Scholar, his contributions significantly impact the fields of behavioral strategy and business performance. In teaching, Sammartino instructs on strategic decision-making challenges in domestic and international settings for students at various experience levels.
