Anastasia S. Morrone is a Professor in the Department of Learning, Design, and Adult Education at Indiana University Bloomington, affiliated with the Learning Sciences program. She served as Dean of the IU Bloomington School of Education from July 2020 through March 2025. Prior to her deanship, Morrone held key administrative roles at Indiana University, including Associate Vice President for Learning Technologies from 2006 to 2020, Deputy Chief Information Officer from August 2020 to June 2021, and Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Indiana University Indianapolis from 2002 to 2006. She joined the faculty at IUPUI (now part of IU Indianapolis) as a Visiting Assistant Professor in 1997, advancing to Assistant Professor in 1998, Associate Professor in 2004, and full Professor in 2015. Earlier positions included Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware from 1994 to 1997 and Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin from 1992 to 1994. Before academia, she worked as a Technical Writer and Instructor at Control Data Corporation from 1983 to 1988 and Associate Technical Writer at Honeywell DATANETWORK from 1981 to 1983. Morrone earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992, with a dissertation on achievement motivation processes and classroom context, and a B.S. in Technical Communication from the University of Minnesota in 1980.
Her research specializes in technology-rich active learning environments that promote student motivation and learning, encompassing educational psychology, pedagogy, space and technology in learning settings, active learning classrooms, e-textbooks, student engagement, and achievement motivation. Notable publications include 'From swimming pool to collaborative learning studio: Pedagogy, space, and technology in a large active learning classroom' (Lee, D., Morrone, A. S., & Siering, G., 2018, Educational Technology Research and Development), 'Musical preferences predict personality: Evidence from active listening and Facebook likes' (2018, Psychological Science), 'Preservice elementary teachers’ voices describe how their teacher motivated them to do mathematics' (Harkness, S. S., & D’Ambrosio, B., 2007, Educational Studies in Mathematics), and the edited book Quick Hits for Teaching with Technology: Successful strategies by award-winning teachers (Morgan, R. K. et al., Eds., 2012, Indiana University Press). Morrone has received major awards such as the Indiana University Bicentennial Medal (2020), P. A. Mack Award from the Faculty Academy for Excellence in Teaching (2018), Indiana University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology (2018), Trustees Teaching Award from IUPUI (2003), and the Benjamin and Dorothy Fruchter Annual Prize for Excellence in Educational Psychology Research at the Doctoral Level (University of Texas at Austin, 1993). She has secured grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and other sources totaling over $2 million for projects on e-text platforms, health education assessment, and classroom innovations.
