Ana Diaz serves as Associate Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages at Montana State University Billings. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy of mind from The Johns Hopkins University in 2010 and a B.A. from Rutgers University. Diaz joined the faculty in 2011 as Assistant Professor and has advanced to her current position as Department Chair. She previously served as a Teaching Assistant in the Philosophy Department at Johns Hopkins University from 2001 to 2004. Her teaching portfolio includes courses in medical ethics, ethics, introduction to philosophy, and political theory.
Dr. Diaz's research interests encompass physicalism, feminism, and intersectionality, with publications addressing problems with causal exclusion and further problematizing the #MeToo movement (2021). She received the Dr. Tasneem Khaleel Award for Mentoring Young Female Professionals from Montana State University Billings in 2023 for her commitment to mentoring women students and faculty, as well as her contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Diaz co-chairs MSUB’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council, leads Native American, Veteran, and Hispanic Outreach efforts, serves as Hispanic Outreach Coordinator and member of the Hispanic Outreach Committee, and acts as the Athletic Diversity and Inclusion Designee—a position created by the NCAA. Additionally, she is a public member of the Montana Board of Medical Examiners and was a three-year member of the American Philosophical Association’s Committee on Hispanics, where she assessed the status of Hispanics and Latinos/as in philosophy and identified discriminatory practices. Originally from Lima, Peru, Diaz immigrated to the U.S. as a child and has participated in panels on women in world religions and International Women’s History Month.
