About Aloysius

Aloysius Martinich is the Roy Allison Vaughan Centennial Professor in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Windsor in 1969, a Master of Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1971, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1973. Martinich is a specialist in the history of political philosophy and the philosophy of language. His research interests include the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and David Hume. In addition to his position in the Department of Philosophy, he has held appointments reflecting his broad contributions to philosophy.

Martinich has authored and edited numerous key publications that have influenced scholarship in early modern philosophy and analytic traditions. Notable books include Thomas Hobbes, Computatio sive Logica: Part One of De Corpore (translation and commentary, 1981), Philosophical Writing: An Introduction (1989, with subsequent editions up to the fourth in 2015), The Two Gods of Leviathan: Thomas Hobbes on Religion and Politics (1992), A Hobbes Dictionary (1995), Hobbes: A Biography (1999), Hobbes (2005), A Companion to Analytic Philosophy (edited with David Sosa, 2001), The Philosophy of Language (edited, first edition 1985, sixth edition with David Sosa, 2012), Much Ado About Nonexistence: Fiction and Reference (with Avrum Stroll, 2007), and Hobbes's Political Philosophy: Interpretation and Interpretations (2021). These works provide critical analyses of Hobbes's political theory, religious views, logic, and broader philosophical themes. Martinich has also engaged in public scholarship, co-presenting the 2020 Herbert Family University Lecture Series on Immigration and Imagination with Michael Lesy. His office is in WAG 416A.
