Dr. Allyson Wilson serves as a Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing within the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. Her comprehensive academic background includes a Bachelor of Nursing (Southern Cross University), Bachelor of Health and Human Sciences with First Class Honours (Southern Cross University), Master of Clinical Science in Mental Health Nursing (Southern Cross University), Master of Nursing (Advanced Practice) from the University of Newcastle, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Southern Cross University, awarded in 2025. Her PhD thesis, titled "Trauma-informed care through the lifeworld of mental health nurses employed in hospital-based mental health settings," supervised by Professors John Hurley, Marie Hutchinson, and Richard Lakeman, investigates the authentic enactment of trauma-informed care in acute mental health nursing practice, drawing from her clinical lived experience.
As a credentialed mental health nurse, educator, and researcher, Dr. Wilson's academic interests center on trauma-informed care, challenging biomedical reductionism, systemic biases in psychiatry, coercive practices, and institutional control, while amplifying lived experience voices and advancing human rights-oriented humanistic care. Her key publications include the seminal "Literature review of trauma-informed care: implications for mental health nurses" (2017, cited over 140 times), "Can mental health nurses working in acute mental health units really be trauma-informed? An integrative review of the literature" (2021, cited 45 times), "Trauma-informed care in acute mental health units through the lifeworld of nurses: An integrative review" (2023, cited 22 times), and "In their own words: Mental health nurses' experiences of trauma-informed care in acute mental health settings or hospitals" (2024, cited 25 times), contributing to over 300 total citations. This body of work has shaped mental health policy and practice, cited in the Australian Productivity Commission's Mental Health Inquiry Report, the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation's Trauma-Informed Care Framework, multiple state health department resources, and the Scottish Government's Trauma-Informed Practice Toolkit. In June 2025, she was awarded the Chancellor's Medal at Southern Cross University's Coffs Harbour graduation for her outstanding PhD research and leadership. Dr. Wilson holds a conjoint role as lecturer and hospital educator, developing educational resources and research projects to promote person-centered mental health care.
