Alison Jobe is an Associate Professor and Director of Postgraduate Research in the Department of Sociology at Durham University, having joined the institution in 2011. She teaches modules on undergraduate and postgraduate Criminology degrees. Jobe's research centres on institutional responses to victims of violence and their access to justice and support services. Her studies have addressed human trafficking, asylum seekers' narratives, sex work, sexual violence, and child protection. Recent work focuses on criminal justice processes for learning disabled and autistic victim-survivors of sexual violence, using participatory and creative methods in collaboration with survivors, Dr Helen Williams, Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland, Northumbria Police, and the Us Too group. Funded by ESRC IAA, Research England, and ESRC, these projects have produced the report Access to Justice? (2020), the film Us Too: Alisha's Story (2022), and visual resources From Us Too to You (2024), alongside dedicated webpages sharing findings and resources.
Jobe has published extensively, co-authoring the book Criminal Women: Gender Matters (Bristol University Press, 2024). Selected journal articles include Criminal justice responses to victims of sexual violence with learning disabilities: Findings from a local study in North East England (Journal of Gender-Based Violence, 2025); Testimonial injustice: exploring ‘credibility’ as a barrier to justice for people with learning disabilities/autism who report sexual violence (Disability & Society, 2025, with Helen Williams); Stigma and Service Provision for Women Selling Sex (Ethics and Social Welfare, 2022, with Kelly Stockdale and Maggie O’Neill); Telling the Right Story at the Right Time: women seeking asylum with stories of trafficking into the sex industry (Sociology, 2020); and ‘If kids don’t feel safe they don’t do anything’: young people’s views on seeking and receiving help from Children’s Social Care Services (Child & Family Social Work, 2013, with Sarah Gorin). She has also contributed book chapters, policy briefings, and evaluation reports on related topics.
