About Alireza

Dr. Alireza Abbasi is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Systems and Computing at UNSW Canberra, a campus of the University of New South Wales, since joining in 2012. His academic journey includes a PhD from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Sydney in 2012, an MSc in Industrial Engineering from Seoul National University in 2008, a BSc in Computer Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology in 2002, and a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching from UNSW in 2017. Abbasi has held key leadership roles, including Coordinator of Project Management programs from 2013 to 2023 and Director of Postgraduate Studies for over two years. He has successfully supervised more than 13 PhD and Master's by research students and mentored postdoctoral researchers.

Abbasi's research expertise spans network science, informatics encompassing data science and artificial intelligence, informetrics, scientometrics, decision support systems, decision and data analytics, and project, program, and portfolio management. He develops intelligent data-driven decision support methods leveraging machine learning and AI to address uncertainties in socio-technical systems, fostering resilience and sustainability in sectors like public health, transportation, energy, construction, and manufacturing. His prolific publication record features highly cited works such as "Identifying the effects of co-authorship networks on the performance of scholars" (2011, 708 citations), "Betweenness centrality as a driver of preferential attachment in the evolution of research collaboration networks" (2012, 650 citations), and the book "Analyzing Knowledge Creation and Transfer in Academic Communities using Social Network Analysis" (2013). Recent contributions include "A dynamic risk interdependency network-based model for project risk assessment" (2025, Computers and Industrial Engineering) and "Investigating disruption propagation and resilience of supply chain networks" (2025, International Journal of Production Research).
