Dr. Ali Hill is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in Sports Nutrition within the Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Otago. She coordinates the MAppSc in Advanced Nutrition Practice and six-month nutrition placements. Her interests include sports nutrition, particularly para-sports, and the education of nutrition practitioners. She holds expertise in the impact of nutrition on sports performance, nutrition for para-athletes, physical activity, and nutrition for health.
Ali Hill earned a BSc (Hons) in Plant Science from the University of Glasgow in 2002, with her undergraduate dissertation on plant phenolics igniting her interest in nutrition. She was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship for her MSc in Nutritional Sciences at Massey University in Palmerston North. Her PhD in Nutritional Immunology from the University of Southampton examined the effects of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in pregnancy on offspring immune systems. In 2019, she completed an MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition with distinction at St. Mary's University, Twickenham. After her PhD, she worked in the UK fitness and leisure industry as a swimming teacher and triathlon coach. Since 2012, she has provided nutritional support to athletes from amateurs to Paralympic competitors and participants in the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). She supported HSX Antarctica, the first scout to ski to the South Pole and kite ski the return journey in 2019. Ali Hill is a Registered Nutritionist, Level 3 ISAK anthropometrist, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
