Dr. Albert Thomas serves as Lecturer in Veterinary Oncology within the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University and is affiliated with The Animal Hospital Murdoch University (TAHMU). He obtained his veterinary degree from the University of Queensland in 2018. Immediately following graduation, Dr. Thomas completed an oncology internship at the Animal Referral Hospital Brisbane, gaining comprehensive experience in surgical, medical, and radiation oncology. He then transitioned to general small animal practice in Perth, concurrently working part-time in anaesthesia at TAHMU. In 2021, he began a rigorous three-year residency in veterinary oncology at Perth Veterinary Specialists, which he successfully completed by passing his specialist examinations in 2025, thereby becoming a Diplomate or registered specialist in veterinary oncology.
With a strong passion for elevating cancer care standards for companion animals, Dr. Thomas's clinical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of oncology, with special emphasis on leukemias, pelvic cancers, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. His prior research investigations have concentrated on paraneoplastic syndromes, principles of evidence-based medicine, clinical trials evaluating immunotherapeutics for solid tumours, and polycythemia vera. Currently, he leads two innovative canine cancer research projects at Murdoch University, funded by Dogs West, which are incorporated into the institution's specialist residency training program. Dr. Thomas has also engaged publicly on pressing veterinary issues, highlighting that cancer incidence remains high—one in four dogs and one in ten cats develop the disease—and advocating for advanced diagnostics, treatment advancements, and the adaptation of targeted human therapies for veterinary use. In addition to his clinical and research roles, he contributes to veterinary education through teaching in the School of Veterinary Medicine and holds a position on the Board of Examiners for the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS), supporting the professional development of future specialists in the field.
