Professor Alan Wee-Chung Liew serves as Head of School for the School of Information and Communication Technology and Professor at Griffith University, Australia. He is also Deputy Director of the Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems. Prior to joining Griffith in 2007, Liew was Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Electrical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong. He earned his B.E. degree with first class honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Auckland in 1992, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Tasmania in 1997.
Liew's academic interests centre on machine learning, medical imaging, computer vision, ensemble learning, and bioinformatics. His scholarly impact is evidenced by over 9,631 citations and an H-index of 50 on Google Scholar, alongside an H-index of 40 on Scopus. Select publications encompass "Segmentation of color lip images by spatial fuzzy clustering" (2003), "An adaptive spatial fuzzy clustering algorithm for 3-D MR image segmentation" (2003), "Discovering biclusters in gene expression data based on high accuracy biclustering" (2008), and "Combining Multi Classifiers based on A Genetic Algorithm" (2014). With more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, his research has garnered significant recognition. He co-designed the Bachelor of Computer Science program at Griffith University in 2016. Liew holds fellowships from the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Australian Computer Society, and is a Senior Member of IEEE. In 2022, he was awarded $1,224,430—the highest in its round—for research funding at Griffith.
