Alan Musgrave served as Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, where he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Philosophy in 1970 at the age of 29, holding the headship until 2005. Educated at the London School of Economics, he obtained a BA (Hons) in 1961 and a PhD in 1969 under the supervision of Karl Popper. Before joining Otago, Musgrave worked as Popper's research assistant, compiled the index for Popper's Conjectures and Refutations, and co-edited the seminal Criticism and the Growth of Knowledge with Imre Lakatos, one of the most influential collections in philosophy of science.
Musgrave's primary research specializations were the theory of knowledge and the history and philosophy of science, with a focus on scientific realism and critical rationalism. Key publications include Common Sense, Science and Scepticism: A Historical Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge (1993), Essays on Realism and Rationalism (1999), and Secular Sermons: Essays on Science and Philosophy (2009). His influential paper 'Unreal Assumptions in Economic Theory: The F-Twist Untwisted' (1981) critiqued economic methodology and received over 500 citations. Musgrave earned the University of Otago's Distinguished Research Medal in 2012, the institution's highest research honor, and the Humanities Aronui Medal from the Royal Society of New Zealand. A Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and the New Zealand Academy of the Humanities, his scholarship amassed thousands of citations, elevating Otago's Philosophy Department to top rankings. He fostered a vibrant research culture, hosted international visitors, engaged in broadcasting on philosophical topics, and inspired the establishment of the Alan Musgrave Master's Scholarship in Philosophy in 2011.
