Alan Forrest, Pharm.D., was a clinical professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy, where he also served as Director of the Center for Pharmacometrics. A world-renowned expert in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling, Forrest dedicated over 30 years to advancing pharmacometrics, significantly influencing drug development and patient therapy optimization in anti-infectives and oncology. His research emphasized translational medicine, integrating preclinical and clinical data through exposure-response analyses and mathematical modeling to enhance clinical outcomes.
Forrest earned his Pharm.D. from the University of Southern California in 1979. His distinguished career spanned faculty positions at the University of Southern California and University of Maryland, followed by a 26-year tenure from 1989 to 2015 as a research professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University at Buffalo. Additionally, he held the position of Senior Director of Pharmacometrics at the Institute for Clinical Pharmacodynamics and served as an expert adviser to the Food and Drug Administration and the pharmaceutical industry. A landmark publication on ciprofloxacin pharmacodynamics in seriously ill patients exemplified his impactful contributions to antimicrobial therapy. In 2016, he received the Lewis B. Sheiner Lecture Award from the International Society of Pharmacometrics. Passionate about education, Forrest mentored over 100 trainees and fellows, shaping the next generation of pharmacometricians. He passed away on August 25, 2018.
