Dr. Aidan Ricketts is a Lecturer in the School of Law within the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. He holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Queensland, an LLM from Queensland University of Technology, an MEd from James Cook University specializing in online delivery and design, and a PhD from the University of New England. With over twenty years of teaching experience in Australia and overseas, Aidan Ricketts is a legal academic, social change trainer, author, and activist.
His research focuses on social movements, activism, law, civil and political rights, and laws related to protest, integrating action research and participatory methods derived from his involvement in democratic social movements. He teaches courses including Australian Legal System, Legal Process, and Drugs Crime and the Law. Key publications include the book The Activists' Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Participatory Democracy (2012), which has been distributed internationally. Peer-reviewed articles feature "Theatre of Protest: The Magnifying Effects of Theatre in Direct Action" (2006), "Threshold Concepts in Legal Education" (2006), "Investment Risk: An Amplification Tool for Social Movement Campaigns Globally and Locally" (2013), "Freedom from Political Communication: The Rhetoric Behind Anti-Protest Laws" (2015), "Beyond Anthropocentrism and Back Again: From Ontological to Epistemological Models of Rights of Nature" (2015), and "Enabling Emergence: The Bentley Blockade and the Struggle for a Gasfield in the Northern Rivers" (2018). Aidan provides professional consultancy, training, and support for social movement groups, including police liaison activities for protests. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals.
