About Adrian

Dr. Adrian Robert Bazbauers is a Senior Lecturer in International Public Sector Management in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the Australian National University awarded in 2013, a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Wollongong in 2008, and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from the University of Wollongong in 2007. Bazbauers' research centers on organisational and institutional analyses of international organisations, particularly development finance organisations such as the multilateral development banks. Drawing from social constructivism and interpretivism, he utilizes mixed qualitative and quantitative research methods, with a focus on comparative historical document analysis. His scholarly interests encompass epistemic communities, knowledge building and sharing, policy transfer and policy mobilities, institutional isomorphism, political economy and neoliberal policy models, gender-based analyses of organisations, and climate change adaptation, mitigation, and resilience. Broader research areas include International Public Sector Management, Global Governance, International Political Economy, Development, and Climate Change.

Bazbauers has authored key publications including the book The Global Architecture of Multilateral Development Banks: A System of Debt or Development? (Routledge, 2021, co-authored with T.F. Group and Susan Engel) and The World Bank and Transferring Development Policy Movement through Technical Assistance (Springer, 2017). His journal articles include 'The Multilateral Development Banks and Rural Climate Finance: Adaptation, Mitigation, and Resilience' (Journal of Environment and Development, 2025), 'Gender and the Multilateral Development Banks: From WID to GAD to Retroliberal WID' (Progress in Development Studies, 2024, with Nadeen Madkour), 'The Anti-illicit Activity Regime of the Multilateral Development Banks: Criminal Acts or Prohibited Practices?' (Journal of Illicit Economies and Development, 2024, with Anthea McCarthy-Jones), 'The multilateral development banks: Conceptualising and operationalising gender' (Women's Studies International Forum, 2023), 'Translating climate strategies into action: An analysis of the sustainable, green, and resilient city action plans of the multilateral development banks' (Development Policy Review, 2022), and 'World Bank technical assistance: participation, policy movement, and sympathetic interlocutors' (Policy Studies, 2020). He teaches undergraduate courses ZBUS3104: Business Capstone and ZBUS3108: Business Strategy Implementation and serves as a PhD supervisor for topics in global governance, organisational and institutional analysis, and climate change initiatives.
