Adekunle Afolabi serves as Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Buffalo. His academic background includes a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Eastern Finland in Finland, awarded in 2019, an MSc in Computer Science from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in 2008, and a BSc in Computer Science from the same university in 2000. Before his appointment at the University at Buffalo, Afolabi held several positions at Obafemi Awolowo University in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, including Senior Lecturer from October 2022 to present, Lecturer I from September 2019 to September 2022, Assistant Lecturer from 2011 to September 2019, Senior System Programmer from 2003 to 2010, and Programmer/Analyst from 2001 to 2003 on the INDEHELA project focused on hospital software development, implementation, and maintenance. Earlier, he completed National Youth Service from 2000 to 2001.
Afolabi's research specializations and academic interests center on artificial intelligence, health informatics, recommender systems, software engineering, and digital storytelling. He is an affiliated faculty member of the University at Buffalo's Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, with contributions to areas including autonomy and robotics, biotech, genomics and pharmaceuticals, and health sciences. His work also emphasizes AI-enabled robust software for health care. Afolabi has received notable awards and honors, such as the CIFAR Exclusive AI Scholarship in 2023, invitation to the 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum for Young Researchers and Scientists in Germany in 2016, and researcher participation awards for high-standard projects at the Nigerian Universities Research and Development Fair in 2004 and 2005.
