Dr. Abeer Al-Najjar is a Professor of Media and Journalism in the Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah. She earned her PhD in International Journalism from the University of Edinburgh in 2004 and a BA in Arabic Literature and Political Science from the University of Jordan in 1995. Her academic career at the American University of Sharjah spans from 2007, advancing from Assistant Professor (2007-2014) to Associate Professor (2014-present) and Professor. Previously, she served as Acting Dean of the Jordan Media Institute (August 2011-September 2012), Assistant Professor at Ajman University of Science and Technology (2004-2005), and held journalism roles including reporter for Al-Dustour Newspaper and Al Sabeel Weekly Newspaper, producer at Saja for Media Production, and contributor to Arab online publications (1995-2004). She was a Visiting Scholar at the Westminster School of Media and Communication, University of Westminster (2018-2019), and Visiting Senior Fellow at the Middle East Center, London School of Economics (2016-2017).
Al-Najjar's research specializations encompass journalistic ethics and practices, media, war and political conflict, women and media, and media and political Islam. Key publications include the edited volume Language, Politics and Society in the Middle East: Essays in Honour of Yasir Suleiman (2019); articles such as 'Western media’s ethical collapse: silencing Gaza’s voice' (Third World Quarterly, 2025), 'Constructing Jerusalem in English-Language News Media' (International Journal of Communication, 2024), '“The deal of the century”: how global media silenced the Palestinians' (2020), and 'Abolish censorship and adopt critical media literacy: A proactive approach to media and youth in the Middle East' (Journal of Media Literacy Education, 2019). She has secured awards and fellowships including the Rolling Research Grant 2026 (American University of Sharjah), Faculty Research Grants, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-GCC Grant, and Gulf Research Center Foundation participation. Al-Najjar serves on the editorial boards of Journalism Studies and the International Journal of Communication, and has presented at conferences on journalism accountability, critical media literacy, and AI in media education.
