About the Department
The Department of Chemistry, with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University.
The research spans all areas of chemistry such as analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, and organic chemistry. The research projects range from theory to experiment, from basic research to more applied projects, often focusing on sustainable chemistry as well as advanced analytical methods for chemicals and materials.
The department has a well-developed research infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment and qualified support from staff scientists.
The department also hosts:

- Master's programme in Sustainable Chemistry.
- Master's programme in Organic Chemistry.
PhD programmes are conducted in five areas:

Project Description
This project focuses on the development of new materials and scrubbing fluids for carbon dioxide capture using aminated nanoparticles, polymers, or colloids.
The hypothesis is that these materials can bind carbon dioxide in a way that reduces the heating requirements needed to release the carbon dioxide during a later process step. This approach is expected to:
- Significantly reduce energy requirements compared to current materials and scrubbing fluids.
- Reduce the risk of harmful degradation products forming during repeated use.
The research will focus on:
- Thermochemistry.
- Phase diagrams.
- Mechanistic studies.
There is also the possibility of adapting the project to suit your interests and previous knowledge.
The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and is carried out in close collaboration with:
- Professor Jiayin Yuan's research group at Stockholm University.
- Professor Christophe Duwig's research group at KTH.
Qualification Requirements
To be admitted to postgraduate education, applicants must satisfy both the general and specific entry requirements. These requirements must be fulfilled by the application deadline.
General Entry Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A second-cycle degree; or
- Completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be at the second-cycle level; or
- Otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
Specific Entry Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies in Materials Chemistry, applicants must have:
- A bachelor's degree with a major in: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics.
- An independent project comprising at least 30 higher education credits at the advanced level.
Applicants who have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in another way, either in Sweden or abroad, are also eligible.
Selection Criteria
Selection among eligible applicants will be based on their capacity to benefit from doctoral education.
Assessment criteria include:
- Documented knowledge in a relevant research field.
- Capacity for analytical and creative thinking.
- Initiative.
- Independence.
- Ability to collaborate.
- Written and oral proficiency in English.
About the Employment
The position is a fixed-term doctoral studentship according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100).
Key employment conditions include:
- Full-time doctoral employment.
- Maximum employment period corresponding to four years of full-time doctoral education.
- The doctoral student is expected to devote the majority of their time to doctoral studies.
- The employment may include teaching, research, and administrative duties to a limited extent (maximum 20%).
A new doctoral employment is initially offered for up to one year, after which it may be renewed for up to two years at a time.
