Why your role matters
The Assistive Technology Specialist is a key role within the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education (PVCE) portfolio, joining the Student Learning team within Equitable Learning Services. This position provides expert advice, coordination, training and ongoing support in the use of assistive technologies, helping students with disabilities access the tools they need to participate fully and succeed in their studies.
Working collaboratively across the University, the Assistive Technology Specialist partners with academic and professional staff, and students to implement, optimise and continuously enhance UNSW's assistive technology ecosystem.
The successful candidate will work directly with students to identify appropriate assistive technology solutions, provide training and guidance, monitor the effectiveness of these technologies, and deliver ongoing support to ensure they continue to meet individual needs.
The Assistive Technology Specialist reports to the Team Lead, Equitable Learning Services and does not have direct reports.
Specific accountabilities include:
- Provide recommendations to key stakeholders on the most appropriate suite of assistive technologies to ensure equitable student participation in education informed by sector benchmarking and user feedback.
- Implement, configure, test, and maintain assistive technologies (hardware, software, peripherals) across learning environments.
- Provide responsive troubleshooting for accessibility-related issues and coordinate with IT for escalations.
- Maintain accurate asset, licence, and configuration records in addition to maintaining records of assistive technology usage and support requests.
- Contribute to policies, standards, and procedures for assistive technology governance and support compliance with relevant legislation and standards (e.g. Disability Discrimination Act, WCAG).
About You:
- Degree qualifications in Information Technology, Social Sciences or related discipline or/and relevant experience of working in a role concerned with promoting, implementing and supporting assistive technology with a wide range of clients with a disability
- Training/teaching experience including capacity to adapt and implement training programs to meet the needs of both staff and students regarding assistive technologies
- Highly proficient computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience in providing technical support for assistive technologies or a similar role within an educational or accessibility context
- Demonstrated up to date knowledge of assistive technologies pertaining to a diverse range of disabilities and familiarity with IT specific language to facilitate communication with other IT professionals
- Extensive understanding and sensitivity to the range of issues experienced by people with a disability.
- Proven ability to work autonomously, ability to organise and monitor own workload, prioritise, and meet objectives whilst maintaining professionalism, effectiveness and accuracy whilst contributing and working within a team environment
- Exceptional customer service skill and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and respond appropriately to people of all backgrounds and culture and in various situations.
