Dr. Zayn Ghonem is an Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation and the Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science within Macquarie University's Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. He holds a PhD in Management from the University of Nantes awarded on 19 June 2020, a PhD in Medicine from Macquarie University awarded on 16 April 2020, a Master of Research in Health Management from the University of Nantes awarded on 1 October 2016, and a Bachelor of Management and Business Administration from the University of Nantes awarded on 1 October 2014. His research interests include health services management, operating theatres management, performance management, organisational structure, human resource management, and organisational resilience. With over a decade of experience in the health and medical research sector, Ghonem focuses on improving healthcare systems for better outcomes and experiences for patients, clinicians, and communities.
Ghonem has held honorary appointments at Macquarie University, the University of Nantes, and the University of New Caledonia, and served as a strategic advisor for government agencies and private organisations in designing, implementing, and evaluating complex programs to improve healthcare service quality and sustainability. His teaching experience includes guest lecturing Introduction to Systems Thinking for the Master of Public Health at Macquarie University in 2020; guest lecturing Health Management for the Master of Health Management at the University of Nantes in 2016-2017; tutoring Organisational Theory and Change Management in Healthcare for the Master of Management at Nantes in 2016-2017; lecturing and convening Introduction to Healthcare Management for the Bachelor of Nursing at Nantes in 2016-2017; lecturing Foundations of Epidemiology for the Bachelor of Nursing at Nantes in 2016-2017; and tutoring Introduction to Microeconomics for the Bachelor of Management at Nantes in 2016-2017. Key publications comprise 'Innovative models of healthcare delivery: an umbrella review of reviews' (BMJ Open, 2023), 'What factors are considered in hospital funding models? A review of the literature on health services funding in organisation for economic co-operation and development countries' (International Journal of Health Planning and Management, September 2023), 'Learning health systems: a review of key topic areas and bibliometric trends' (Learning Health Systems, January 2022), and 'Innovative models of care for the health facility of the future: a protocol for a mixed-methods study' (BMJ Open, November 2022). He shared the Wiley Top Cited Article 2021-2022 award for a paper published in Learning Health Systems. Ghonem has presented on topics such as 'Innovative models of care to meet consumer and provider needs for new Australian Hospital' (February 2022) and contributed to projects including case studies of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures implementation (2019).
