About Yoshihide

Yoshihide Satoh is Professor in the Department of Physiology at The Nippon Dental University School of Life Dentistry at Niigata, Japan, and Director of the Major Subject Program in Physiology of Mastication and Salivation within the Graduate School of Life Dentistry. He obtained his dental education at The Nippon Dental University from 1986 to 1992 and 1992 to 1996, along with studies at Tokyo Medical and Dental University Faculty of Dentistry in 1993. Holding DDS and PhD degrees, Satoh has held positions at Nippon Dental University since 1996, including roles at the School of Life Dentistry at Niigata and the Junior College at Niigata, culminating in his current professorship since at least 2017.

Satoh's research centers on the neuroscience of oral functions, with key interests in swallowing, mastication, and jaw movements. He has led several JSPS KAKENHI grants, such as projects from 2023-2026 on mechanisms of swallowing disorders in basal ganglia diseases and new treatments, 2020-2023 on swallowing disorders in Parkinson's disease, and earlier works on central control of swallowing during mastication and regeneration of the inferior alveolar nerve. Notable publications include "Suppressive effect of the swallowing reflex by stimulation of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus" (Neurosci. Res., 2021), "Stimulation of the center of the lateral reticular nucleus suppresses the swallowing reflex in rats" (Neurosci. Lett., 2022), "Modulation of the swallowing reflex by stimulation of the gigantocellular reticular nucleus in the rat" (2023), and books like "Basic Dental Physiology, 7th Edition" (2020), "Dental Physiology Practice, 2nd Edition" (2022), and "Oral Anatomy, Histology, and Physiology" (2022). In 1999, he received the 7th Niigata Dental University Dental Society Academic Research Encouragement Award. Satoh serves as a councilor for the Dental Basic Medicine Society and Niigata Dental University Dental Society since 2014 and 2017, respectively, and on committees for national dental hygienist and dentist examinations. He is also on the editorial board of Odontology and teaches courses on physiology of mastication and salivation, principles of oral sciences, and related seminars.
