About Yonghui

Professor Yonghui Li is a Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, where he serves as Director of the Wireless Engineering Laboratory. He obtained his PhD degree from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in November 2002. Since 2003, he has been associated with the Centre of Excellence in Telecommunications at the University of Sydney, advancing through various roles to his current position. Li's academic interests center on wireless communications, channel coding, Internet of Things technologies, and signal processing. His research has advanced key areas including millimeter wave systems for future mobile networks, hybrid beamforming with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, short block-length codes for ultra-reliable low-latency communications, physical layer network coding, and innovative holographic WiFi systems such as HoloFi for applications in digital mining.

Professor Li has made substantial contributions to the field through over 300 publications in leading journals and conferences, three authored books, and ten book chapters. Among his most influential works are 'Millimeter Wave Communications for Future Mobile Networks' (IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 2017, over 1,300 citations), 'Hybrid Beamforming for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Based Multi-User Communications: Achievable Rates with Limited Discrete Phase Shifts' (2020, 589 citations), 'Cooperative Communications: Hardware, Channel and PHY' (2010, 572 citations), 'Practical Physical Layer Network Coding for Two-Way Relay Channels: Performance Analysis and Comparison' (2010, 604 citations), and 'Short Block-Length Codes for Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications' (2018, 510 citations). His scholarship is evidenced by an h-index of 76 and more than 22,000 citations on Scopus. Li has received major honors including IEEE Fellowship (2019), Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (2012-2016), ARC Industry Laureate Fellowship (2025), and recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (2025). He holds editorial roles such as Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications and Guest Editor for IEEE JSAC's special issue on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (2021), and has served as TPC Symposium Co-Chair for IEEE ICC 2014, IEEE GLOBECOM 2017, and 2020, earning Best Paper Awards at IEEE VTC-Spring 2017 and VTC-Fall 2022.
