Professor Wesley Imms is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, serving as Head of Visual Art and Design Education in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and Co-Director of the Learning Environments Applied Research Network. He holds a PhD in Curriculum Studies and a research MA from the University of British Columbia, a BEd, and additional education degrees from Australia and Canada. Imms has a distinguished career as an educator, with teaching experience spanning primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, for which he has earned multiple teaching awards. His professional journey includes roles as a lecturer and extensive higher degree supervision and teaching in Masters programs at the University of Melbourne.
Imms' research centers on the impact of innovative learning environments on teaching practices and student learning outcomes. He has led two Australian Research Council Linkage projects and amassed $17 million in external funding, including over 70 research contracts across 20 countries, cultivating broad international partnerships. Notable publications include the co-edited book Teacher Transition into Innovative Learning Environments: A Global Perspective (Springer, 2020) and A Teacher Guide to Evaluating Learning Spaces: Is My Use of Environment Helping Students Learn Better? (in press). Other key works encompass A Systematic Review of the Effects of Innovative Learning Environments on Teacher Mind Frames (2020) and contributions to studies on teacher transitions and learning space evaluations. Imms has been recognized with the 2023 Melbourne Graduate School of Education Award for Excellence in Research Programs with External Organisations and a 2015 Faculty of Education Research Award. His scholarship plays a pivotal role in advancing the design and use of school spaces worldwide.
