Wendie A. Berg, MD, PhD, FACR, FSBI, is Distinguished Professor of Radiology and Dr. Bernard F. Fisher Chair for Breast Cancer Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where she serves in the Breast Imaging Division at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. She earned BS and MS degrees in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in 1981 and MD and PhD degrees in Pharmacology from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1987. Berg completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Union Memorial Hospital in 1988, residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1992, fellowship in Abdominal Imaging there in 1992, and a mini-fellowship in Breast Imaging in 1993. Her early career included faculty positions at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1995 and at University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1995 to 2003, advancing to Professor of Radiology with tenure in 2002. She joined the University of Pittsburgh as Visiting Professor in 2011 and became full Professor in 2012, with tenure conferred in 2013. Berg also holds an appointment as Professor in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute since 2019.
Berg's research focuses on breast imaging, particularly supplemental screening methods for women with dense breasts, including ultrasound, MRI, tomosynthesis, and contrast-enhanced mammography to improve cancer detection and reduce false positives. As Study Chair and Principal Investigator of the ACRIN 6666 trial, funded by the Avon Foundation and National Cancer Institute, she demonstrated the benefits of adding annual screening ultrasound or a single MRI to mammography in high-risk women, published in JAMA (2012 and 2008). She has authored or coauthored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and co-edited three editions of the textbook Diagnostic Imaging: Breast. Berg led multicenter trials on breast PET, shear-wave elastography, and ongoing studies comparing contrast-enhanced mammography to tomosynthesis. She serves as Chief Scientific Advisor to DenseBreast-info.org and contributed to BI-RADS ultrasound and mammography lexicons. Her honors include the 2012 Global Breast Cancer Medical Achievement Award from Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, 2012 Honorary Fellowship of the Austrian Roentgen Society, 2013 Pathfinder Award from the American Society of Breast Disease, 2015 Pink Ribbon Award from the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, multiple Radiology Editor’s Recognition Awards, and repeated selections as a Best Doctor in Pittsburgh Magazine. Principal Investigator on NIH/NCI grants and Breast Cancer Research Foundation awards since 2016, Berg's work has significantly influenced breast cancer screening practices.
