Wei Yang Cheong serves as Vice Provost (Strategic Research Partnerships) at Singapore Management University, a role he has held since 2023. In this position, he formulates and implements strategic research partnerships with government and industry. Prior to joining SMU, Dr. Cheong held senior positions in the Singapore public service, including as Deputy Secretary (Technology) at the Ministry of Health, where he contributed to health research and innovation initiatives, and as Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific and Greater China at the Singapore Economic Development Board. He also serves as Senior Adviser (Health Economics) at the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Cheong holds a DPhil in Economics from Oxford University, with a dissertation titled “Housing and Credit in an Overlapping Generations Model.” He earned an MPhil in Economics from Oxford University, receiving the George Webb Medley Prize for Best MPhil Exams. His undergraduate degrees are from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained SB degrees in Chemical Engineering and Economics, along with a minor in Chemistry. He was recognized with Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa honors, a GPA of 5.0/5.0, and the Roger de Friez Hunneman Prize for Best Undergraduate Thesis in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Cheong is a Rhodes Scholar and a Public Service Commission Overseas Merit Scholar. His work emphasizes data-driven and interdisciplinary approaches to research impact, including areas such as health economics and longevity economies.
