Dr. Khong Wei Leong is a Lecturer in the Department of Common Engineering within the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Computer Engineering from Universiti Malaysia Sabah in 2009, Master of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2013, and PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, focusing on measurement and analysis of physiological parameters using signal processing techniques, in 2018 from the same university. Prior to his appointment at Monash, he served as a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah from 2018 to 2020. In his current position, Dr. Khong acts as the Course Director for Common Engineering undergraduate programs and coordinates the unit Engineering Smart Systems (ENG1013). He is a registered graduate engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Dr. Khong's research interests lie in biomedical engineering, image and signal processing, artificial intelligence, vital signs monitoring, and e-health. His work emphasizes non-contact methods for assessing physiological parameters, including heart beat rate measurement through video imaging and photoplethysmography imaging techniques. He has contributed as a peer reviewer for the Elsevier journal Biomedical Signal Processing and Control from September 2021 to March 2023. Among his accolades are two Gold Medals and Exhibition Awards from the Malaysian Invention and Design Society in 2014, Silver Medals from AFAG Messen und Ausstellungen GmbH in 2013 and the Korea Invention Promotion Association in 2012, the Best Paper Award from the IEEE Control System Society Chapter Malaysia in 2012, and a Bronze Medal from the Professional Trade Exhibition and Meeting Planner in 2012. Key publications include "Deep Learning-Based Malaysian Sign Language (MSL) Recognition: Exploring the Impact of Color Spaces" (2024), "Viola–Jones Method for Robot Vision Purpose: A Software Technical Review" (2024), "Contact and non-contact heart beat rate measurement techniques: Challenges and issues" (2021), "National Instruments LabVIEW Biomedical Toolkit for Measuring Heart Beat Rate and ECG LEAD II Features" (2019), "Analysis of heart beat rate through video imaging techniques" (2016), and contributions to image segmentation and vehicle tracking (2011–2012).
