Dr. Wahseem Soobratty is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University. He currently serves on secondment as Head of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Curtin Singapore and as Deputy Director of Learning and Teaching in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance. Soobratty completed his PhD in Accounting and Finance in 2018 at Curtin University, where he obtained all his academic degrees. His academic journey at Curtin began in 2011 as a sessional academic, progressing to his present full-time senior lectureship. With over 15 years of experience in senior academic and education leadership roles, he holds professional qualifications as a Chartered Accountant from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and as a CPA Australia member, complemented by prior experience as an experienced auditor.
Recognized for his commitment to educational excellence, Soobratty won the Curtin Student Guild Excellence in Teaching Award in 2020 and received commendations in the 2023 Excellence in Teaching Awards for teaching and postgraduate research supervision. In 2015, he was honored as Teacher of the Year by the School of Accounting and received the Curtin University Teaching Excellence Award. He co-developed the innovative 'The Cookie Company' business simulation for introductory accounting education, earning a 2020 AICPA Accounting Educator Award alongside colleagues. His publications include co-authorship of the textbook ACCT1002: An Introduction to Financial Decision Making with Jacqueline Birt and David S. Kidwell. Additionally, he co-authored an article in the Journal of Accounting Education (Volume 73, June 2026) on collaborative online international learning to develop a sustainability mindset. Soobratty regularly delivers guest lectures on creative teaching practices, student engagement, and global perspectives in business and economics careers.
