About Vijaya

Vijaya Hogan, DrPH, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. In Health Science, she specializes as a perinatal epidemiologist. She earned her DrPH in Maternal and Child Health and Epidemiology from UNC Chapel Hill in 1994, MPH in Maternal and Child Health from UNC in 1988, and BA in Nutrition from Hampshire College in 1985.

Dr. Hogan's career includes extensive roles in academia, federal agencies, and foundations. She currently holds an Adjunct Professor position in Public Health Leadership at UNC since 2022 and serves as Founder, Principal, and CEO of Vijaya K. Hogan Consulting LLC since 2019. Prior positions encompass Full Clinical Professor in Maternal and Child Health at UNC from 2015 to 2017, Associate Professor from 2002 to 2015, Faculty Fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research from 2002 to 2015, MCH Program Officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation from 2016 to 2019, and Lead Epidemiologist in the Preterm Delivery Research Group at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1998 to 2002. Earlier experience includes state maternal and child health epidemiologist in Michigan and various research and consulting roles at UNC and other institutions.

Her academic interests center on health equity, maternal and child health disparities, preterm birth, infant mortality, social determinants of health, institutional racism, intersectionality, and preconception health. Notable publications include "Accelerating Birth Equity using Collaborative Systems Mapping" (2024), "Road to Equity in Maternal and Child Health: Honoring the Past and Blazing New Paths" (2023), "Dimensionality and R4P: A Health Equity Framework for Research Planning and Evaluation in African American Populations" (2018), "Disparities in Infant Mortality and Effective, Equitable Care" (2012), and "The Impact of Social Disadvantage on Preconception Health, Illness and Well-being: An Intersectional Analysis" (2013).

Among her honors are the Jackson Rowley Hogan Black Maternal Health Scholar Award, Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society membership (2009), Sidney S. Chipman Award for Outstanding Professional Promise (1997), and multiple CDC Performance Awards (1997-2003). She has served on the U.S. DHHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality (2018-2020), March of Dimes Scientific Advisory Committee for the Prematurity Campaign, and CDC Preconception Care Workgroup, advancing efforts to address perinatal disparities.
