Vanessa Clothier serves as Senior Lecturer and Deputy Course Director for the Master of Advanced Nursing and Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, a position she has held since joining the institution in January 2017. Possessing a Bachelor of Nursing (BN), Postgraduate Diploma in Critical Care, Master of Nursing Science (MNSc), and credentials as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP), she brings over 26 years of extensive nursing experience spanning remote area nursing, critical care transport, and emergency departments since 1996. Clothier was selected as a Nurse Practitioner candidate in the Victorian Government's inaugural seed funding round in 2004, becoming one of the first 10 endorsed Nurse Practitioners in Victoria. She continues weekly clinical practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Emergency at Monash Health, alongside her longstanding role as Registered Nurse there since 1994. Additionally, she coordinates the Nurse Practitioner stream in the Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing (M6031) and serves as Unit Coordinator and Chief Examiner for units such as NUR5411 Advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning, NUR5218 Advanced clinical decision making, and NUR5600 Nurse Practitioner essentials.
Her research interests center on the clinical applications of Nurse Practitioners, emergency care innovations, and the evaluation of Nurse Practitioner academic programs. Notable publications include "Australian emergency nurses’ lumbar movement during a shift: An observational study" (2022, Australasian Emergency Care) co-authored with Kelly-Ann Bowles and others, and "Femoral nerve blocks for fractured neck of femur patients: A ‘feel good solution’ but a ‘short-term fix’?" (2015, Emergency Medicine Australasia) with Julia Morphet. Clothier has received significant recognition for her educational leadership, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2025 for revitalizing the Master of Nurse Practitioner course, which saw enrolments increase by 1600% from seven students in 2017 to over 120 by 2025, and the Monash Nursing and Midwifery Prize in 2024. She is the founder and Chair of the Australian Nurse Practitioner Academics Collaborative (ANPAC) and holds memberships in the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), College of Emergency Nursing Australasia (CENA), Australian Emergency Nurse Practitioner Collaborative (AENPC), and Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF).
