Rate My Professor V. Ramgopal Rao

Professor V. Ramgopal Rao serves as the Group Vice-Chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, overseeing its campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, Dubai, and Mumbai, and holds the position of Senior Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He previously served as Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi from 2016 to 2021 and as a Chair Professor in Nanoelectronics at both IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, following 18 years as faculty in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay. His academic background includes a B.Tech in Electronics and Instrumentation from Kakatiya University in 1986, an M.Tech from IIT Bombay in 1991, a Ph.D. in Nanoelectronics from the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in 1997, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1997 to 1998.

Professor Rao is an internationally recognized researcher in nanoelectronics with more than 500 publications and over 50 patents, including 20 issued U.S. patents, several of which have been licensed for commercialization and are used in hundreds of millions of integrated circuits worldwide. He co-founded two deep-technology startups, Nanosniff and Soilsens, and has guided 52 Ph.D. students. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences, the Infosys Prize, the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, the J.C. Bose National Fellowship, and the IEEE Electron Devices Society Education Award. He has delivered over 200 plenary, keynote, and invited lectures, serves on the editorial advisory boards of several international journals, and has played a key role in establishing major nanoelectronics programs in India.
