Uwe Roehm

Associate Professor Uwe Roehm serves in the School of Computer Science within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, where he holds the position of Deputy Head of School (Research) and organizes the Database Research Group. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at ETH Zurich in 2002. Roehm joined the University of Sydney in 2004 and has progressed to Associate Professor, specializing in data engineering and big data. From 2015 to 2019, he directed the Master of Data Science program and played a key role in introducing Data Science and Computational Data Science majors to undergraduate curricula. His academic career emphasizes practical systems development in database technologies.

Roehm's research interests encompass machine learning integrated with database systems, data management on multicore hardware, big data processing for bioinformatics, middle-tier caching and replication, and cloud data management. He is internationally recognized for contributions to database management systems, transaction processing, and scalable data analytics. Notable achievements include the ACM SIGMOD Test of Time Award in 2018 for the paper 'Serializable Isolation for Snapshot Databases' (co-authored with M.J. Cahill and A.D. Fekete, presented at SIGMOD 2008 and published in ACM TODS 2009, with 432 citations).
