Dr. Ugur Turhan serves as Senior Lecturer in Aviation in the School of Science at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales, and concurrently as Deputy Director of the Capability Systems Centre. He earned his PhD in Civil Aviation Management from Anadolu University in 2007, with a dissertation titled "Selection of Ab-Initio Air Traffic Controllers and Its Implementation in Turkey." His Master's degree, also from Anadolu University in 2001, focused on "Workload Effects in Air Traffic Controller’s Performance and Research in Turkey." Before his current roles, he was Assistant Professor at Eskisehir Technical University and Anadolu University, and held a visiting professorship at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Additionally, he occupied key positions such as Deputy Chair of the Air Traffic Control Department and CNS/ATM Safety Management System Director at Anadolu University International Airport, along with board membership in national committees related to air traffic management incidents and licensing in Turkey.
Dr. Turhan's research centers on air traffic management, airport operations, aviation safety, and human factors in aviation. He has participated in high-profile European Commission-funded projects, including FACT under HORIZON2020 SESAR (2020-), Skill-UP under Erasmus+ (2020-), STRESS (2016-2018), IMPACT (2015-2018), and SECONOMICS (2012-2015), serving as researcher and coordinator for his institutions. Notable publications encompass "Deep Learning Approaches for Classifying Aviation Safety Incidents: Evidence from Australian Data" with Nanyonga et al. (2025, AI), "Professionalizing Mission Engineering in Australia: UNSW Canberra's Innovative Micro-Credential Model" with Amarawardhana et al. (2026, Systems Engineering), "Developing a competency model for aircraft maintenance technicians" with Gunes et al. (2026, Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology), "Blockchain Integration in UAV Networks: Performance Metrics and Analysis" with Hossain et al.
