Dr. Tony Lin serves as a Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care at the University of Otago, Wellington, within the Faculty of Medicine in the Health Sciences Division. He earned his MBChB from the University of Otago in 2006 and a BMedSc (Hons) from the same institution in 2004. Lin completed his PhD in Surgery at the University of Auckland in 2020. His clinical career includes roles as a General and Colorectal Surgeon at Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley, and affiliations with Wakefield Hospital. He holds certifications from the American Board of Surgery (2015), Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and New Zealand Medical Council Vocational Registration (2019). Lin's academic appointments bridge clinical practice and research, contributing to surgical education and training at the University of Otago.
Lin's research focuses on surgical outcomes, equity in access to elective surgery, and postoperative care in areas such as colorectal procedures and hernia repair. Notable publications include co-authorship on 'Access to and quality of elective surgery in Aotearoa New Zealand: a prospective cohort study using hernia surgery as a tracer procedure' in The Lancet Global Health (2024), 'Risk Factors for Readmission in Excisional Haemorrhoidectomy' in the Journal of Surgical Research (2024), and 'Outcomes for men undergoing rectal prolapse surgery: A national cohort study' in Colorectal Disease (2023). His work has informed national discussions on surgical prioritization tools and disparities in care. Lin supervises student research projects, with supervisees presenting findings at conferences, such as summer research posters. Through his publications and clinical-academic role, Lin impacts surgical practice and policy in New Zealand, emphasizing quality and accessibility in elective procedures.
