Associate Professor Tony Garry is a prominent academic in the Department of Marketing at the University of Otago, serving as MBA Director and Head of Department for Executive Programmes within the Otago Business School. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham, focusing on relationship marketing and law firms, an MSc from Coventry University, a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a BA (Hons) in Business Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (HE) from Cardiff University. Prior to joining the University of Otago, where he has been since migrating to New Zealand with his family in 2009, Garry held positions at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and De Montfort University in the UK. His earlier career spanned public and private sectors, including roles at Hewlett Packard, British Telecom, the Greater London Council, and Neville Russell chartered accountancy firm. Garry teaches in the MBA programme, leveraging the diverse professional experiences of students to foster mutual learning and incorporating global perspectives on marketing challenges.
Garry's research specializations centre on the interface between services and emergent technologies, as well as the determinants and consequences of actor engagement, interactivity, and connectivity in online, offline, and emergent contexts. He has authored or co-authored 35 refereed journal articles, 65 conference papers, three journal guest editorials, one co-authored book, and seven book chapters. Notable publications include 'An overview of content analysis' (2003, The Marketing Review), 'An investigation into gamification as a customer engagement experience environment' (2015, Journal of Services Marketing), and 'Dynamics of wellbeing co-creation: a psychological ownership perspective' (2021, Journal of Service Management). Garry has received multiple Emerald Publishers Literati Network Awards for Excellence, including Outstanding Paper of the Year (2016), Highly Commended Papers (2018, 2019), Outstanding Reviewer of the Year (2015, 2018, 2022), and four Best In Track Conference Paper Awards (2018, 2007, 2007, 2003). He has supervised eight doctoral students to completion, contributing significantly to the field through his editorial and supervisory roles.
