Associate Professor Tino Mercado serves in the Department of Oral Sciences within the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago. He holds qualifications including DocMedDent, GCClinDent, MDSc, PhD, MRACDS, FICD, FPFA, and FITI. His academic background encompasses training in oral pathology and periodontology, with his PhD focused on the regenerative management of peri-implantitis and the treatment of recession defects around teeth and implants using autogenous and alternative tissues combined with biologically active products. Mercado's research specializations center on periodontal medicine, mucogingival surgeries, and dental implants. His publications address periodontal prognostication, correlations between periodontitis and systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes mellitus, mucogingival surgical techniques, and bone regeneration. Mercado has held associate professor positions at the University of Otago, University of Queensland, and University of Sydney, contributing to periodontal postgraduate programs. With more than 25 years as a practicing periodontist, he supervises postgraduate and undergraduate students in periodontics and dental implants and maintains clinical involvement in periodontal medicine, mucogingival surgeries, and dental implants. He received the 2021 Australian Dental Association Service Medallion Award for contributions to clinical periodontics, periodontal research, and teaching. Additional honors include the 2020 Osteology Research Award in the Clinical Research Category for maxillary anterior ridge preservation research, recognition at Euro-Perio 9 in 2018 for a presentation on sub-epithelial connective tissue grafts with enamel matrix derivative, an oral presentation award at IADR 2017, and a certificate from the ITI World Symposium 2017.
