Chapman's research centres on the textural and chemical analysis of high-grade and high-pressure metamorphic and igneous rocks, integrating petrological, geochemical, structural, and phase equilibria modelling approaches to study geological processes from micro- to tectonic scales. His investigations focus on the formation and evolution of the lithosphere and mantle, employing field relationships, microscopy, geochemistry, and micro-analytical techniques on samples from extreme Earth conditions. Active field areas include Fiordland in New Zealand, New Caledonia, the New England Orogen, and central Australia.
