About Tim
Tim Mazzarol is an Emeritus Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow within the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia, where he specialises in entrepreneurship, innovation, marketing and strategy. He holds a PhD in Management and an MBA with distinction from Curtin University of Technology, and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Murdoch University. His academic career at UWA began in 2001 as a Senior Lecturer in the Graduate School of Management, followed by roles as Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Management and Innovation from 2003 to 2007, Director of Doctoral Programs from 2008 to 2009, and Winthrop Professor of Marketing Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation from 2010 to 2022. Prior to UWA, he was at Curtin University from 1994 to 2000, serving as Research Fellow with the Institute for Research into International Competitiveness, Executive Director of the Small Business Unit, and Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship. Before entering academia, he worked as a high school teacher with the Education Department of Western Australia from 1981 to 1983, Foreign Affairs Officer with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1983 to 1992, and Assistant Agency Manager at National Mutual Limited from 1992 to 1993.
Mazzarol's research interests encompass strategic management of small firms, innovation and commercialisation management, entrepreneurship, co-operative and mutual enterprises, services marketing, word-of-mouth marketing, international education marketing, and industry clustering. He is the author or co-author of several textbooks, including Small Business Management: Theory and Practice (2020), Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Theory, Practice and Context (2020), and Workbook for Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Theory, Practice and Context (2020). Notable publications include SMEs engagement with e-commerce, ebusiness and e-marketing (2015), co-operatives as a strategic network of small firms (2013), and push-pull factors influencing international student destination choice (2002). His work has garnered over 17,600 citations with an h-index of 53 on Google Scholar. He has led Australian Research Council Linkage projects on word-of-mouth marketing in financial services, sustainable energy use, and sustainable co-operative business models. As Coordinator of the UWA Co-operative Enterprise Research Unit, Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Management and Innovation, and founder Director and Company Secretary of the Commercialisation Studies Centre, he has significantly influenced entrepreneurship and innovation studies. A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management WA, past President of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand from 2012 to 2018, and Qualified Professional Researcher, Mazzarol delivers executive education and consults for industry and government.
