Rate My Professor Thomas Hiscox

He earned his PhD in microbial genomics from Monash University between 2006 and 2012, investigating the genetic regulatory systems that control virulence gene expression in the myonecrotic bacterium Clostridium perfringens. Initially, his research focused on bacterial gene regulation and molecular drug design aimed at developing novel antimicrobials. Transitioning to education research, Hiscox now specializes in leveraging digital technologies in science education and evaluating the effectiveness of applied learning strategies in teaching cell biology and molecular biology. His current work emphasizes student engagement in large lecture cohorts and the integration of employability skills to prepare undergraduate science students for the workforce. Key publications include "Automated liquid handler from a 3D printer" (Journal of Chemical Education, 2024), "Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in higher education: a systematic scoping review" (Teaching and Teacher Education, 2024), "Sample loading in gel electrophoresis using adapted 3D printers" (Analytical Biochemistry, 2025), and "The pore-forming α-toxin from Clostridium septicum activates the NLRP3 inflammasome" (2015). In recognition of his teaching excellence, Hiscox received the Dean's Excellence in Teaching Award in October 2021.
