About Tania

Tania Markovic is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. She serves as Director of the Metabolism & Obesity Services and Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Endocrinology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney Local Health District. Markovic earned her MBBS with Honours from the University of New South Wales, completed her PhD at the same institution with an NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship at the Garvan Institute, where she investigated the effects of weight loss on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes, and holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). Specializing in endocrinology following training at St Vincent's Hospitals in Sydney, her research focuses on obesity, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and nutrition, particularly nutritional management of type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, gestational diabetes, and obesity in adolescents and adults including those with psychiatric disorders, intellectual disability, and Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Markovic leads the Clinical Trials Unit at the Charles Perkins Centre, overseeing researcher- and sponsor-initiated clinical trials through the Boden Collaboration. She co-authored the Australian Obesity Management Algorithm and contributed to guidelines for very low energy diets in individuals with diabetes and kidney disease. As President of the National Association of Clinical Obesity Services and a member of the International Network for Research, Management & Education on adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome (INfoRMEd-PWS), she helps develop international guidelines for Prader-Willi Syndrome management. Her influential publications appear in journals such as Diabetes Care and Diabetologia. Key works include 'Randomized Controlled Trial Investigating the Effects of a Low-Glycemic Index Diet on Pregnancy Outcomes in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus' (Diabetes Care, 2016), 'Associations of Diet and Physical Activity with Risk for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis' (Nutrients, 2018), and 'The PREVIEW intervention study: Results from a 3-year randomized 2 x 2 factorial multinational trial investigating the role of protein, glycaemic index and physical activity for prevention of type 2 diabetes' (Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2021). Her Google Scholar profile shows over 4,300 citations.
