About Susumu

Susumu Ueno, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Professor in the Department of Occupational Toxicology at the Institute of Industrial Ecological Sciences, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan (UOEH), in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. He obtained his M.D. from UOEH School of Medicine between 1985 and 1991, followed by a Ph.D. from UOEH Graduate School of Medical Science from 1991 to 1995. Ueno's professional trajectory at UOEH includes positions as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine from 2001 to 2010, Associate Professor in early 2011, and Professor in Occupational Toxicology since April 2011. He has held the role of Director of the Institute of Industrial Ecological Sciences since April 2022 and Director of the Center for Stress-related Disease Control and Prevention since April 2026. Additionally, he oversees research projects involving assistant staff such as Tomonori Igarashi, M.D., Ph.D.

Ueno's research centers on occupational toxicology, neurotoxicology, neuropharmacology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. Specific interests include the evaluation of central neurotoxicity of chemical substances, cardiotoxicity of chemical substances with emphasis on proarrhythmic potential, and investigation of cytotoxicity and protein-binding ability of nanoparticles. In 1997, he was awarded the Uehara Memorial Life Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship for Overseas Study. Selected key publications encompass "Circadian sleep-wake rhythm reversal in mice implanted with stomach cancer cell lines" (The Journal of Physiological Sciences, 2025), "Induction of systemic inflammation by welding fume exposure in office workers as well as welders in welding factories" (The Journal of Toxicological Sciences, 2025), "Comparing the Results of Mask Fit Tests for Replaceable and Disposable Masks - A Study of Japanese Male Welders" (Earozoru Kenkyu, 2023), "Inhibition of Citric Acid-Induced Dentin Erosion by an Acidulated Phosphate Sodium Monofluorophosphate Solution" (Materials, 2023), and co-authored recommendations for occupational exposure limits (Sangyo Eiseigaku Zasshi, 2024 and 2025). Ueno has delivered public lectures on occupational poisoning in Japan and noise-induced hearing loss in international training courses hosted by UOEH.
