Dr Susie Raymond is a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Education in the School of Education within Adelaide University’s College of Education, Behavioural and Social Sciences. She earned a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education from the University of South Australia, a Master’s of Gifted Education from Flinders University, and a PhD in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Australia. With over twenty years of experience in leadership and teaching across preschool and schooling sectors in South Australia, she currently serves on secondment to the Office for Early Childhood Development, implementing recommendations from the Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care. In 2023, Susie Raymond appeared as an expert witness before the Hon. Julia Gillard and submitted evidence that contributed to the commission’s 43 recommendations in its final report. Her doctoral research employed a qualitative multiple case study design, underpinned by Social Cognitive and Ecological theories, to explore early years teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs, their sources, influences on practice, and proposed an Ecological Framework for Teacher Self-Efficacy Development within an enabling ecological system.
Susie Raymond’s research specializations encompass teacher self-efficacy in early childhood settings, democratic pedagogies in initial teacher education, reflective teaching using 360-degree cameras, strengths-based support for international preservice teachers through immersive placements, dialogic pedagogies to enhance assessment quality, children’s voices in play, and social comparison in cross-cultural contexts. Her work informs transitions for preservice teachers to graduates via co-designed learning frameworks. Notable publications include Raymond, S., & Gabriel, F. (2023). She received the Education Research Academy Fellowship in 2022 for her project on early childhood international preservice teachers. Susie leads projects such as ‘Seeing things from a different angle: Using 360-degree cameras to support reflective teaching practice’ (2023) and supervises doctoral students on topics including playgroup models and quality assessment in playgroups. She teaches courses like EDUC 5247 Leadership, Accountability and the Challenge of Complexity.
