Emeritus Professor Stewart Campbell holds a BSc (Hons) from the University of Aberdeen (1966), an MSc from the University of Salford (1969), and a PhD from Monash University (1974). His distinguished career began with cryogenic research and development at Oxford Instruments, UK (1974-1976), followed by an ARGS Research Fellowship at the Faculty of Military Studies, UNSW Canberra (1976-1979), and a Research Fellowship at the Australian National University (1979-1983). He joined UNSW Duntroon as Lecturer (1983-1986), advancing through Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor roles in the School of Physics and School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences at UNSW Canberra until his appointment as Emeritus Professor in 2005. Campbell has held visiting fellowships, including multiple Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowships at Universität des Saarlandes (1983, 1989), University of Reading (1994), Johannes Gutenberg Universität (2000), and Technische Universität München (2003), as well as a Visiting Fellowship at ANU (1983-2006).
Campbell's research focuses on experimental and analytical studies in condensed matter and materials physics, encompassing rare earth magnetism in intermetallic and magnetocaloric materials, nanostructured materials, shape memory alloys, and spin crossover materials. He utilizes techniques such as Mössbauer effect spectroscopy, x-ray, synchrotron, and neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, muon spin resonance (MuSR), and DC/AC magnetic measurements. With approximately 300 refereed publications, three book chapters (1989, 1993, 1996), and chief editorship of 10 volumes of international conference proceedings on Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetism, and neutron scattering, his work has significant impact, evidenced by over 140 externally funded grants including nine ARC Discovery Projects and 13 ARC LIEF grants. Key recent publications include 'Tunable Negative Thermal Expansion in Fe/Cr-Substituted Nd2Co17 Compounds via Magnetoelastic Coupling' (2026), 'Impact of Controlled Magneto-Structural Coupling in MnCoGe-Based Compounds on the Design of Multifunctional Materials for Technological Advances' (2025), and 'Effects of Fe substitution for Mn on structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of TbMn2-xFexSi2' (2024). His honors include Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics (1982), Fellow of the Institute of Physics UK and Chartered Physicist (1985), AINSE Gold Medal (2007), ANBUG Career Award (2019), and IBAME Fellow (2019). Campbell has led roles such as Vice-President/President/Past President of ANBUG (2003-2008) and Australian Representative on IBAME (1994-2012), contributing to advisory committees for neutron facilities worldwide.
