About Stella

Stella Huangfu is an Associate Professor in the School of Economics at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, where she joined in 2006. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Toronto, completed in 2007, and a Master of Arts in Economics from the same university in 2002. Her academic career at the University of Sydney progressed from Lecturer in the Discipline of Economics (2006-2011) to Senior Lecturer (2012-2021), and to her current role as Associate Professor since 2022. She serves as the Coordinator for the Master of Economic Analysis (MEcA) program and received the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Excellence Award in 2015.

Huangfu's research focuses on monetary economics, theory on frictional markets, and macroeconomic theory. Her publications appear in prestigious journals, including the Journal of Economic Theory ("Competitive Search Equilibrium in Monetary Economies," 2007, with Miquel Faig), International Economic Review ("Contingent Prices and Money," 2011, with Richard Dutu and Benoit Julien), European Economic Review ("Macroeconomic Theory of Banking Oligopoly," 2021, with Mei Dong, Hongfei Sun, and Chenggang Zhou; "The Role of Frictions in the Long-Run Relationships Between Inflation, Unemployment and Capital," 2020, with Pedro Gomis-Porqueras and Hongfei Sun), Journal of Money, Credit and Banking ("Money and Costly Credit," 2021, with Mei Dong), Canadian Journal of Economics ("Private Money and Bank Runs," 2011, with Hongfei Sun), Macroeconomic Dynamics ("Inflation and Real Wage Dispersion: A Model of Frictional Markets," 2018, with Min Zhang), and Economic Record ("The Effects of Inflation on Market Participation and Search Intensity," 2018). She co-authored the textbook Macroeconomics, 5th Australasian Edition (Pearson Australia, 2024, with Olivier Blanchard, Jeffery Sheen, and Ben Wang). As Chief Investigator, she obtained an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (DP210101688, 2021-2024, $287,304) for "Banking System Competition and the Macro-economy," collaborating with Mei Dong, Timothy Kam, Allen Head, and Hongfei Sun. Huangfu engages in public discourse, providing expert analysis on interest rates, inflation, and central bank policies for The Conversation and the Australian Financial Review.
