Dr. Stefan Peters serves as Senior Lecturer in the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences within the College of Sciences at Adelaide University. He earned his Ph.D. in Cartography and Dipl.-Ing. in Geodesy and Geoinformation from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, where he played a key role in establishing and coordinating the joint international M.Sc. program in Cartography. His professional journey spans over 25 years, including Senior Lecturer positions at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2015-2016) and the University of South Australia (2016 onwards, prior to the merger forming Adelaide University), Research Associate at the Chair of Cartography at TUM (2008-2014), GIS developer roles in Spain and Germany (2007-2008), and Cadastral Technician at the Bavarian State Agency for Surveying and Geoinformation (1997-2002).
An internationally recognized geospatial scientist, Dr. Peters specializes in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), forestry, and ecology. His research focuses on advanced spatio-temporal analysis to convert complex geographic data into actionable insights, with applications in wildfire mitigation, precision forestry, biodiversity conservation, early fire smoke detection using AI for CubeSats, vegetation stress estimation, wood volume estimation via LiDAR, and habitat corridor modelling. He collaborates with industry partners like SmartSat CRC and Forest and Wood Products Australia. Key publications include Peters et al. (2024) "Detecting Coseismic Landslides in GEE Using Machine Learning Algorithms on Combined Optical and Radar Imagery" in Remote Sensing; Meng et al. (2024) "A theoretical framework for improved fire suppression by linking management models with smart early fire detection and suppression technologies" in Journal of Forestry Research; and Fitzgerald et al. (2025) "Vegetation assessment using remote sensing: a systematic review for eucalypts in Australia" in Austral Ecology. Dr. Peters has received the Erasmus+ Award (2014), IARIA GEOprocessing Best Paper Award (2014), Annals of GIS Best Paper Award (2012), and Runder Tisch GIS e.V. Advancement Award (2009). He holds editorial roles as Review Editor for Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, International Journal of Cartography, and ISPRS-IJGI, and serves as Vice-chair of the ICA Commission on Education and Training (2016-2024), among other professional memberships.
