Dr. S.P. Kumaresh Babu serves as Professor HAG in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. He obtained his Ph.D. in Metallurgy from NIT Trichy in 2006, M.Tech. in Process Metallurgy from NITK Surathkal in 1997, M.E. in Industrial Metallurgy from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore in 1991, AMIIM equivalent to B.Tech. in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Metals, Calcutta in 1994, and B.E. in Production Engineering from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore in 1987. His research specializations encompass corrosion, coatings, surface engineering and tribology, metal casting and related processes, welding technology, and composite materials, with emphasis on new alloy development, casting technology, surface engineering, tribology, and corrosion studies. He has published over 90 papers in refereed international journals, 5 in national journals, more than 60 international conference proceedings, and 25 national conference papers. Key publications include 'Solid Particle Erosion Behavior of Cast CY5SnBiM at Room Temperature' in Journal of The Institution of Engineers (India): Series D (2019), 'Room-Temperature Erosion Behaviour of Nb-Stabilized 27Cr–7Ni–Mo–W–N Cast Hyper-Duplex Stainless Steel (Nb + CD3MWN - 7A)' (2018), 'Thermal kinetics and phase stability of 8 mol% samaria doped zirconia nanopowders prepared via reverse co-precipitation' in Ceramics International (2017), 'Studies on Intergranular Corrosion Characteristics of Cast Duplex Stainless Steel Stabilized with Niobium' in ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation (2017), and 'Phase transformation and crystal growth behavior of 8mol% (SmO1.5, GdO1.5, and YO1.5) stabilized ZrO2 powders' in International Journal of Minerals, Metallurgy and Materials (2017).
Dr. Babu brings more than 20 years of combined industrial and academic experience. He joined NIT Trichy as Assistant Professor in May 2007, advancing through the ranks to Professor. Prior roles include Assistant Professor at VIT Vellore (2006-2007) and SBCEC Arni (2003-2004), and 12 years as Foundry Engineer and Metallurgist in industries such as Sanmar Foundries, SSL Chennai, and Secals Ltd. He has guided 9 Ph.D. scholars and 1 M.S. by research to completion, and currently supervises 9 Ph.D. and 1 M.S. scholars. He has led 5 completed projects and 1 ongoing project totaling Rs. 4 Crores, funded by DST, DRDO, TEQIP, NLC-India, and Ministry of Coal, resulting in two joint international patents filed. Previously Head of Department, he has organized faculty development programs, short-term programs, national and international seminars, workshops, and conferences. He serves as a reviewer for international journals in materials science and engineering and holds life membership in the Indian Institute of Metals and Indian Welding Society, along with membership in the Indian Institute of Welding. He received the TEQIP research scholar grant in 2005.
