Sonja Pippin is a Professor of Accounting and Director of the Master of Accountancy Program in the Business & Economics faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno's College of Business. She joined the Department of Accounting in 2006 as an Assistant Professor after earning her Ph.D. in Business Administration with a focus on Accounting and Tax from Texas Tech University in 2006. She also holds an M.S. in Accounting (Tax) from Texas Tech University (2001) and an M.S. in Geography from the University of Zürich (1998). Promoted to Associate Professor in 2012, Pippin teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in individual and business entity taxation, financial accounting, and related topics. She also works as a tax consultant at Excelsis Accounting Group.
Pippin's research specializes in taxes and tax policy. Her publications appear in academic journals such as Advances in Taxation, Journal of the American Taxation Association, Journal of Legal Tax Research, and practitioner outlets including Strategic Finance, Journal of Accountancy, and The CPA Journal. Notable works include 'Perceived and Actual Consequences of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act: A Survey of Americans Living Abroad' (Advances in Taxation, 2018, with J. Wong and R. Mason), 'Tax harmonization in the European Union and the eurozone: a multilateral analysis of tax systems' (Financial Theory and Practice, 2016, with M.S. Tosun), 'Court Rulings in Estate Tax Cases: Is Gender a Factor?' (Journal of Legal Tax Research, 2014, with M. Jackson and J. Wong), and 'Trusts and estates: Uses and tax consideration' (Journal of Accountancy, 2017). She has earned the College of Business Graduate Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award for Executive MBA (2017) and for Accounting (2013, 2015, 2016), Beta Gamma Sigma Researcher of the Year (2011), and Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Faculty of the Year (2009). Pippin is active in professional organizations including the American Accounting Association, American Taxation Association, National Tax Association, American Institute of CPAs, and Nevada Society of CPAs.
