Rate My Professor Solomon Hsiang

Solomon Hsiang is a Professor of Global Environmental Policy at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and a Professor of Environmental Social Sciences. He also serves as Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Hsiang directs the Global Policy Laboratory at Stanford University. He is a co-founder and co-director of the Climate Impact Lab, co-founder of mosaiks.org, Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a National Geographic Explorer. Hsiang is co-editing the Handbook of the Economics of Climate Change and co-leads the Aerial History Project. Previously, he was faculty at the University of California, Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy from 2013 to 2024. He served as the first Chief Environmental Economist at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy from 2023 to 2024 and was Lead Author of the Economics chapter in the Fifth National Climate Assessment in 2023. He is also Director of Graduate Studies for Global Environmental Policy at Stanford.

Hsiang earned a B.S. in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science and a B.S. in Urban Studies and Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006. He received a Ph.D. in Sustainable Development from Columbia University in 2011. He completed postdoctoral fellowships in Applied Econometrics at the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2011 and in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at Princeton University in 2013. His professional appointments include roles on the Board of Directors of the Climate Impact Lab, as an Economic Advisory Council member for the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and on the Statistical Advisory Panel for the United Nations Development Program. Hsiang received the American Geophysical Union Science for Solutions Award in 2013 and the Geological Society of America President's Medal in 2020.
