Sivaramakrishnan Balachandar is the Newton C. Ebaugh Professor and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering within the University of Florida's Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. He earned his Master’s degree in applied mathematics and engineering in 1985 and his Ph.D. in 1988 from Brown University. Before joining the University of Florida in 2005, he was a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for 15 years. At UF, he served as Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, founding director of the Institute for Computational Engineering, and director of the Center for Compressible Multiphase Turbulence. His research focuses on computational multiphase flow, direct and large eddy simulations of transitional and turbulent flows, particle-turbulence interactions, environmental flows, and integrated multiphysics simulations of complex problems. Balachandar pioneered compressible multiphase flow models and multiscale numerical frameworks utilized by the Department of Energy and Department of Defense at national laboratories and military bases. He introduced key concepts including the equilibrium Eulerian formulation, pairwise interaction extended point-particle model, and machine learning approaches for multiphase closure models. His contributions extend to applications such as virus-laden droplet ejection studies during the COVID-19 pandemic to quantify viral transmission risks and inform public health measures.
Balachandar has authored four books and 290 journal papers, amassing over 26,000 citations. He has mentored 55 PhD students and 34 postdocs and research scientists, with 20 former students becoming professors worldwide and 21 joining DOE and DOD national laboratories. His accolades include the 2024 ASME Fluids Engineering Award, the 2017 Freeman Scholar Award, the 1996 François Naftali Frenkiel Award from the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics, and the 2023 University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Balachandar serves as co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Multiphase Flow, associate editor of Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics, and a member of the executive board of the International Conference on Multiphase Flow.
